Of this novel it has been said that it is one of the best of all time and an indisputable classic of German literature although its author did not win the Nobel prize for literature for this one but for The Buddenbrooks, in 1929 and in my opinion much better .
The action is located at the beginning of the 20th century, in a tubercular spa located in Davos Platz, in the Canton of Grisons (Switzerland). Its protagonist, Hans Castorp, travels from Hamburg up there to spend three weeks on vacation with a cousin of his
who is admitted there. But, what at first supposed that it was going to be a short stay, it becomes a stay of seven years, due to a hypothetical complication in its health.
Therefore Mann, what tells us, are the seven years of parenthesis in the life
of this young man
We get to feel the monotony of time as he tells us almost every day the repetitive activities he does there including their respective cures of rest in the open air, on their terraces and hammocks (hence the one on the
cover) and lined with a blanket; as well as the fact of taking the temperature about six times a day.
We are witnesses, in addition to the relationships that are establishing with the different "inhabitants" of the place which are the most diverse and which
more bizarre, from those who are hospitalized, to the doctors who serve them. Despite this and thanks to these relationships, we observe in him an existential evolution that is what the author really wants to capture.
